Finally, a victory in a long-fought battle.

What does it mean?

The statute of limitations is no longer a barrier.

If you lived or worked at Camp Lejeune between August 1, 1953 to December 31, 1987 and suffered water toxicity-related diseases such as cancer and other illnesses, you may be eligible for settlement compensation from the government. This toxicity is believed to potentially cause birth defects, cancer and other life-altering diseases.

  • Why is this happening now?
For years, North Carolina law had blocked people from filing lawsuits against the government in regards to Camp Lejeune contamination. Military members and their families faced steep legal hurdles when attempting to pursue compensation from the government for their injuries. Congress has been working on a bill to lift the statute of limitations that would usually prevent the filing of a lawsuit and it has just recently been approved. Now, it’s possible for affected people to file a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
  • What was in the water at Camp Lejeune?
More than 70 chemicals were found to be present in the Marine Corps base at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Numerous studies discovered the high levels of water contamination, the water that people drank and bathed in, to be linked to neurological disorders. The three main contaminants were trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), and benzene.
