Watch Out: “Brushing” Scams Are Targeting Floridians
Think twice before opening that unexpected package on your doorstep — a new brushing scam is quietly targeting Florida residents. This quick read could save you and your loved ones from a costly mistake.
There’s a scam making the rounds in Florida, and while it might seem like a generous surprise at first glance, it’s anything but. It’s called a brushing scam, and although it’s not brand new, it’s back with a high-tech twist. The attorneys at Avera & Smith explain how the scam works and provides important information on how to keep you and your loved ones safe.
What is a brushing scam?
A brushing scam typically starts with an unexpected package showing up at your door. You didn’t order it. It’s from a company you’ve never heard of. And there’s no note, no sender, no receipt. Just a mystery item — maybe a ring, bracelet, necklace, or even a Bluetooth speaker.
At first, it might feel like a harmless (or even fun) mix-up. But here’s the catch: the goal isn’t to give you free stuff. It’s to get you to scan a QR code that’s included in the package. The card or insert might say something like “Scan to see who sent your gift!” Sounds innocent enough, right? Don’t do it.
That QR code is the scammer’s golden ticket. As soon as you scan it, they can potentially access everything on your phone — from personal messages and contact lists to sensitive financial info. In some reported cases, victims even had their bank accounts emptied shortly after scanning the code. Yes, it’s that serious.
What to do if you receive a brushing scam package
If you receive one of these mystery packages:
- Don’t scan anything. Especially not the QR code. Not even “just to see.”
- Keep or toss the item — your choice. The item itself usually isn’t dangerous. But again, do not engage with any links or codes that came with it.
- Warn your family and friends. These scams are increasingly showing up in Florida, and often target people who might not be as tech-savvy, like elderly relatives or teens who might think it’s a fun gift.
- Report it. You can report suspicious packages to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service or directly to the retailer (like Amazon) if their name appears anywhere on the box. Due to the growing prevalence of brushing scams in Florida, Amazon has a dedicated webpage where you can report unsolicited packages. Learn more here.
A note on QR code scams: QR code scams aren’t limited to brushing schemes. They’ve also popped up in other places — like fake parking meters and phishing emails — so it’s a good rule of thumb to avoid scanning any code you didn’t expect or don’t trust.
