Partner Rod Smith discusses his role as prosecutor in the “Gainesville Ripper” case on FOX True Crime Podcast

In August 1990, the college town of Gainesville, Florida, was gripped by terror as a brutal serial killer stalked its streets. Over four horrifying days, five University of Florida students were found brutally murdered in their apartments, leaving the community in shock. The killer, later identified as Danny Rolling, became infamously known as the “Gainesville Ripper.” His brutal killings involved extreme violence, mutilation, and posed crime scenes, adding to the atmosphere of horror.

Danny Rolling’s path of destruction didn’t begin in Gainesville; he had a history of violent crime and mental instability. After his arrest for unrelated robberies, DNA evidence linked him to the grisly Gainesville murders, and he was eventually charged with the heinous crimes.

The task of bringing Rolling to justice fell to Rod Smith, a seasoned prosecutor and State Attorney for the Eighth Judicial Circuit of Florida. Rod, known for his legal acumen and courtroom presence, took on the emotionally charged case with the weight of the community’s grief and fear on his shoulders. He meticulously built a case against Rolling, gathering evidence and presenting the full horror of the crimes to the jury. His work was key to exposing Rolling’s depravity, ensuring no detail of the killer’s brutality was overlooked.

In 1994, under Rod’s leadership as the prosecutor, Danny Rolling pleaded guilty to all five murders and was sentenced to death. Rod’s dedication and skill in the courtroom were pivotal in securing the conviction and ultimate execution of Rolling in 2006. Rod became a partner at Avera & Smith in 2000, where his impressive accomplishments, greater level of trial experience, and legal expertise have been instrumental in helping Avera & Smith become one of the best trial law firms in the state of Florida.
