Gary Wimsett, Jr. brings a unique combination of experience in civil trial law, criminal appellate law, government law, and substantial work as an expert in ethics, risk management, and conflicts of interest to the firm. Gary has also spoken nationally on legal and regulatory issues at the intersection of law and medicine. He has over 24 years of wide-ranging experience in complex legal, regulatory and ethical matters – a valuable asset to the Avera & Smith team.
Gary graduated from the University of South Florida with a B.A. in English Literature in 1993. He earned his law degree from the University of Florida in 1997, where he served as the Associate Articles Editor of the Florida Law Review.
Before joining Avera & Smith, Wimsett served as the Assistant Vice President for Conflicts of Interest at the University of Florida, and the Chair-Elect for the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Forum on Conflict of Interest. He also served as a lecturer for the University of Florida’s College of Medicine and was a member of Shands’ Ethics Committee. His attention to detail, sound judgment, and deep understanding of issues are hallmarks of his client advocacy.

On a more personal note, Wimsett lives a life consistent with the values he learned from his father, who taught him the importance of discipline and living a life of service and integrity. One way he honored that legacy was as a member of the Board of Directors for the Ronald McDonald House of Gainesville, Inc. Gary and his wife, local attorney Mary K. Wimsett, have three daughters, Emma, Charlotte and Lily.
