Diabetic Drug Avandia Update
Although the majority of an FDA panel voted in 2010 to recommend the recall of Avandia, no Avandia recall has yet occurred. More than six million people worldwide have used Avandia (generic name rosiglitazone) since it was approved eight years ago. In 2007, the FDA issued a Safety Alert regarding Avandia – yet the drug is still in use by about one million patients in the United States
.
Avandia is one of the most popular drugs taken by Diabetic patients. However, major health risks associated with the drug, including death, started surfacing in the year 2000. Since then, there have been a spate of lawsuits filed against GlaxoSmithKline, who is the manufacturer of the drug.
Avandia was actually a drug prescribed as an alternative to a diabetes drug called Rezulin, which was found to have serious health risks. Unfortunately, health risks, including risk of death, started surfacing in case of Avandia, as well. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning alert about the potential harm that this drug can cause. Hence, any patient facing any damage or risks as an outcome of Avandia can seek legal aid.
Do you have a case?
The Avandia lawsuits can be filed as personal injury claims by patients to secure compensation for the damage. Such lawsuits are primarily based on the fact that Avandia is a drug known to cause severe side effects, including death. However, patients should be able to prove that the side effects and injuries caused are specifically attributable to the drug. Generally, those patients who suffer from any cardiovascular problems such as heart attack or heart congestion, liver reactions or any severe toxicity can seek compensation for this.
In some unfortunate cases where the damage has proven fatal for patients, families of victims have sought monetary compensation for the loss. Patients may either directly approach a lawyer or meet with other patients who have faced similar problems to seek legal aid as a group. In any case, it is important that the lawyer chosen has specific experience of handling personal injury claims particularly related to the medical field.
